Local Author Wins International Book Award for One Million Times I Love You

August 2026 — Local author Karen (Renn) James has been recognized on the international stage as the winner of the 2026 International Book Award in the Children’s Picture Book: Softcover Nonfiction category for her book One Million Times I Love You. The book was also named one of six finalists in the Mind/Body/Spirit category.

Presented by the American Book Fest, the International Book Awards are among the world’s largest book award programs, receiving thousands of entries from authors and publishers across the globe. Winners and finalists are selected from works published by major publishing houses, independent presses, and self-published authors.

One Million Times I Love You began as a story for James’s daughter following her daughter’s diagnosis of childhood-onset schizophrenia. Inspired by her daughter’s repeated question, “Do you love me?” the book celebrates the limitless nature of unconditional love through playful rhyme and colourful bird illustrations. Its message resonates with children, families, educators, and caregivers alike.

“This book is my expression of the unconditional love we have for our children.  I hope this book helps every child, and every reader, know they are loved for being who they are,” said James. “To see it recognized internationally is incredibly humbling.”

American Book Fest President and CEO Jeffrey Keen noted that this year’s competition attracted thousands of submissions from around the world before being narrowed to winners and finalists.

At its heart, One Million Times I Love You reminds readers that love is not earned by achievement or changed by circumstance—it simply is.
